A V A I L A B L E

(adj.) Able to be used or obtained. At someone’s disposal. Free to do something. Not busy. Not otherwise committed. Ready for use or service.

It’s been a year, hasn’t it? A time in our lives we never would have thought would darken our doors. We were forced to change our normal daily activities to confinement. Life was forced to slow down. We were forced to surrender our control over a lot of things. And I think we were forced to take a look at life and what it means to each of us.

High school doesn’t feel like it was yesterday any more. It’s been awhile since that carefree time, and a lot of things happen in your 20’s. A lot of choices. A lot of growing up. A lot of deciding what you are going to do and where you are going to go.

As I near the end of this decade, I have been wondering constantly, “What is the purpose of all of this? What is the reason for being here?”

My 20’s was focused a lot on getting my degree to find purpose in it. Becoming a guidance counselor to have a career to find purpose in it. Being a better volleyball coach and finding purpose in it.

I actually laugh at the irony that I taught my volleyball girls this exact idea for weeks during my last season of coaching: our purpose is to bring glory to God. Man, I was good at knowing all of that but not actually doing it from my heart. I was very wrapped up in the idea that I was doing anything and everything to “serve” Christ with my life.

But I was missing something more important. It’s the one thing that will actually lead us to a life that brings glory to God. A growing relationship with Christ, a daily surrendering to the Holy Spirit who lives inside of me.

You can’t just have a relationship that is half-hearted, one-sided or scattered. It’s pretty obvious when we do something for someone but our heart isn’t in it. You know?

We don’t disguise our hearts to Him. We just tend to disguise them to ourselves and think we’re doing just fine the way things are going. You will know what your heart truly loves when you ask God to show you.

A man’s heart is so important to our Heavenly Father. Your heart. My heart. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Matthew 6:21

So why am I going on the World Race? Because I am available. I am able to be used, my heart is able to be obtained, because my heart isn’t preoccupied with the things of this world as it has been.

It is not because my circumstances are available to do something like this. I’ve been praying about this for two years, and it was not time yet. He wanted my heart to be available, not just my circumstances.

This isn’t about missions or service because reaching people for Christ and serving others can be done daily in any neighborhood. People need the Lord. It is because my heart is not otherwise committed to anything outside of Jesus Christ that I am ready for use or service.

How about you?

God does not lead each of us to the same things in life. We don’t have to be available for missions if that isn’t His specific leading for us.

He wants our heart to be available to Him. Is your heart able to be used or obtained by the Holy Spirit? His purpose for each of us is to draw close to Him daily and bring glory to Him through our life.

It starts with our heart. Who is controlling your heart? There are only two options: You or the Holy Spirit?
